On 27 September 2026, from 10:00 to 17:00, the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia invites visitors to celebrate Miķeļi, the traditional Latvian Autumn Harvest Festival marking the autumn equinox.
Visitors are welcome to explore the Miķeļi Market, experience ancient harvest rituals, enjoy a hearty autumn harvest soup, and take part in a wide range of activities for both children and adults.
In the Latvian seasonal calendar, Miķeļi marks the autumn equinox, when day and night are once again of equal length. In Latvian folklore, the festival is also known as Apjumības, celebrating the completion of the grain harvest. According to ancient beliefs, Jumis is the spirit of fertility dwelling in every grain field. For generations, Jumis played a significant role in the lives of Latvian farmers, inspiring numerous customs and rituals. One of the most important traditions is the "Catching Jumis" ritual, performed to ensure fertile fields and abundant harvests in the coming year.
With the harvest gathered, it is time to head to the market. The Miķeļi Market is traditionally the richest market of the year, overflowing with the bounty of autumn. Throughout the day, more than 60 Latvian artisans and artisan food producers will offer their handmade creations and seasonal delicacies.
Visitors will find beautifully crafted baskets, warm knitted garments, handmade jewellery, ceramics, wooden crafts and textile products, alongside an abundance of locally produced food. Artisan producers will offer freshly baked bread, cheeses, smoked meat products, delicious pastries and cakes, homemade sauces, local honey, and a wide variety of seasonal fruits, vegetables and other harvest treasures.
The Miķeļi Autumn Harvest Festival offers a wonderful opportunity to experience authentic Latvian traditions, discover outstanding local craftsmanship, and celebrate the richness of autumn in one of Europe's most beautiful open-air museums.
