Accessibility
The Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum is open to everyone and works to make the museum’s exposition as accessible as possible to people with mobility impairments. The open-air museum is an 86-hectare forest area. The museum’s exposition consists of groups of buildings – peasant homesteads from different regions, in which the arrangement of buildings – residential buildings, a barn, a summer house, a bathhouse and a granary is scientifically justified, in accordance with the lifestyle of the 17th-20th centuries. Peasants’ homesteads and individual public buildings are located in different parts of the museum’s territory and are connected by natural paved roads. In good weather conditions, all major roads in the museum are accessible by wheelchair.
There is a special ramp for visitors in wheelchairs to enter the museum’s exhibition hall and view the exhibitions. Facilities for people with mobility impairments are located near the museum’s exhibition hall. During the summer season, the café “Pūnīte” is available, with service outside the premises. The specifics of historical wooden buildings are narrow doors, irregular stone porches and high thresholds, which are specific to the construction of log buildings. The museum is working to make it possible to enter some buildings with a wheelchair during the summer season. The roads in the museum are regularly maintained and groomed, but it cannot be denied that their quality is affected by weather conditions, rain in autumn, creating mud in some places, and snow and ice in winter.
