The contemporary folk applied art collection began to be formed in 1978 and currently includes more than 3,250 objects.

The collection is regularly expanded in order to document current developments in folk applied art in Latvia and in the Latvian diaspora.

It includes objects created in a wide range of materials and techniques, such as:

  • knitted items
  • woven objects
  • wickerwork
  • woodcraft
  • metalwork
  • stained glass
  • ceramics

Objects are selected for the collection based on their cultural and artistic significance and uniqueness, reflecting the continuity of folk art traditions and their role in preserving Latvian national identity.

The collection also includes works by professional artists, in which direct references to ethnographic heritage can be observed.
